Stylist Lor-e Phillips is an industry veteran who is best known for styling the Black Eyed Peas for the past twelve years. However, in addition to being a stylist, she has two clothing lines, one with Will.i.am and a list of credits that range from magazine editorials, album covers, film and television. She also has her own unique sense of style that mixes vintage finds with her own collections and more.
Lor-e was kind enough to sit down with The Icon Concierge and give us some more insight into her rocking fashion style, and what it’s like to work with the Black Eyed Peas!
ICON: Tell our readers about your career and how you got started as a stylist.
LP: I met Will.i.am back in the day at a club in Hollywood before he even signed with Eazy-E. We started talking about fashion and have been best friends ever since. During the writing of the Elephunk album in 2001 we became partners and I started styling the group. We also started a line of menswear called i.am clothing.
ICON: Why style musicians?
LP: With musicians I feel it allows you more freedom, opposed to actors, who are expected to look a certain way on the red carpet. Musicians can wear pretty much anything and get away with it, that’s why they are so much more fun creatively.
ICON: You’ve worked extensively with the Black Eyed Peas. A group that has a lot of mixed and cool personalities, how do you dress each of them to reflect that?
LP: I’ve known them all for almost 18 years, so I already know what they do and don’t like personally. It’s pretty easy for me to automatically say, “Oh, that’s Taboo … that one is Will, or only apl.de.ap wears that.” However, they all did have that bow tie phase…thank God that’s over!

ICON: How does your music influence what you wear?
LP: I’m not sure if music influences the way I dress. I think my mood does, but music sets the mood. If I listen to a lot of Led Zeppelin I feel like I want to be a hippie rock n’ roller.
ICON: What’s on your iPod, besides the Black Eyed Peas?
LP: Melissa Etheridge, and more Melissa Etheridge! Also, Fiona Apple, Lady Gaga, Goldfrapp, Indigo Girls and Concrete Blonde, Cowboy Junkies, Snoop, really all kinds of things!
ICON: What are you currently obsessed with right now in your closet?
LP: An industry jacket, Ten{d} to Life jewelry, VSP jewels and Rick Owens loose black pants.
