I’ve been waiting to write this post for almost a week. I saw so many amazing designs, collections, prints and colors at New York Fashion Week that it took a moment to compile it all and create a complete Spring 2013 guide for you as you look ahead to build up your closet for next season. If you want to know what to wear this season you can check out my fashion editors post or see my Street Style posts here and here.
So here we go…the Spring 2013 fashion trends as seen on the catwalks!
PRINTS—they were everywhere. Wild, colorful, blocky, floral, circles, zig-zags you name it and we saw it at NYFW! The winner of the print competition was definitely Proenza Schouler who combined fierce prints with dominant colors and accents of perforated leather and lace. Other favorites included Derek Lam who had the best yellows on the runway, and Rebecca Minkoff who did not disappoint with her youthful and attainable designs.
MINT GREEN—This was probably the most surprising trend for me this season. It was everywhere. What I love about this easy color is that you can build it into your wardrobe in so many ways. This isn’t your average bridesmaids seafoam…it’s fresh, light and can be worn well with white, black or even a deep plum or burgundy!
CROP TOPS—Don’t try this at home ladies. It’s time to dig up your pilates video, because crop-tops were everywhere. Some of the fashion set (read street style favorites) even preempted the trend and were wearing it on the streets. It’s chic, if you do it right and balance it properly with a full bottom, but be careful or you may end up looking like J.Lo in her video days! My favorite was the floral at Peter Som.
JUMPSUITS—Remember when you were five and your mother dressed you in Levi’s jumpsuits religiously? Well, they’re back! Bold, colored, printed and striped, jumpsuits made a comeback on the runways this season in a variety of ways. Want to make yours stand out? Wear with a chunky heel, a bold lip and a statement necklace.
FLORAL—While this trend is not new, it’s here for another season. Floral can be dainty and feminine, but hard and grunge if paired with leather and sequin accents. Don’t be afraid of the sometimes busy patterns either. Embrace it and balance with solid colored neutrals.
BLACK & WHITE— Black and white has always been a staple in classy women’s wardrobes. These two colors are classic and when paired together and can really bring a certain refined elegance, even when done in perforated leather or lace. However, be careful and stick to different textures, otherwise you may look like a waiter.
LEATHER—Leather for Spring? You betcha! Colored, perforated, studded, holed, mini, long, blue, black and white. Leather was on the runway at almost all designers in some way or form. And, I’m loving it! Specially the Proenza Schouler vest in the middle, yum!
