It may seem like everyday you hear about a new designer, however some, are really worth paying attention to. Alice Yim is one of my new favorites. A designer who creates beautiful feminine pieces, with a certain girl in mind. A girl who isn’t afraid to be a bit edgy with a minimalist approach. That’s kinda how I see myself in fact. While I wear trends, I really appreciate the basics, but still like to think of myself as a bit of a fashion rebel. That’s kinda where Yim’s line fits in, and why I asked to interview her for ICON.
ICON: What made you decide to start your own fashion label?
AY: Being a fashion designer was my childhood dream. After working in the industry for 8 years to build up my design and technical skill, I decided it was time to start my brand.
ICON: What inspires you when you design?
AY: Time and solitude is what I need to get inspire. Usually it’s a month long process of research. I find myself drawn to artwork, vintage clothes, fabrics, trims, traveling and exploring other cultures.
ICON: What type of girl wears Alice Yim?
AY: Ladies who appreciate quality over quantity. Working professionals with developed taste and style.
ICON: What is your favorite part of being a designer?
AY: I enjoy the whole process. From creating the designs, seeing the actual samples and catching sight of the garments on people in the streets.
ICON: How would you like to see your brand grow? Where do you see Alice Yim in 5 years? In 10 years?
AY: In 5 years people will recognize the brand and know what we have to offer, which will eventually include handbags and accessories. I will have my own sample room and a flagship store in NYC. In 10 years I’d like to see stores in all major cities worldwide.
